According to the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA), this year’s tournament will offer a staggering $65 million in prize money. This is a significant increase from last year’s total payout of about $60 million. The boost in prize money can be attributed to the USTA’s decision to increase the amount of expenses covered for players.
This year holds special significance as it marks the 50th anniversary of the US Open becoming the first tennis event to pay equal prize money to both women and men. As a testament to this milestone, the winners of the singles championships will each receive $3 million in 2023. While this represents a 15% increase from last year’s prize money of $2.6 million, it is still lower than the pre-pandemic payout of $3.9 million in 2019.
Players who are eliminated in the earlier rounds of the tournament will also benefit from increased compensation. For instance, those exiting in the first round of singles will receive $81,500, compared to $80,000 in 2022 and $58,000 in 2019. This raise in prize money not only rewards players’ efforts but also acknowledges the inherent challenges of competing at such a prestigious event.
Furthermore, the champions of the doubles categories will see an increase in their earnings. Each winning team will now receive $700,000, up from $688,000 in 2022. This adjustment reflects the USTA’s commitment to recognizing the skill and dedication demonstrated by doubles players.
In addition to the increased prize money, the USTA is implementing additional measures to support the players. For the first time, competitors will be provided with $1,000 travel vouchers to alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with participating in the tournament. Furthermore, the USTA will offer a second complimentary room at the official tournament hotel to all players, ensuring their comfort and convenience throughout the event. Alternatively, players may choose to receive a stipend of $600 per day, which represents a significant increase from the previous $300, to be used for other housing arrangements. Meal allowances and racket stringing services have also been increased to further assist players.
When considering the prize money offered at all Grand Slam tournaments this year, the US Open stands out as the leader. With a total compensation of approximately $60 million based on results, it surpasses the prize pools of Wimbledon, the French Open, and the Australian Open. Wimbledon offered around $56.5 million, the French Open provided approximately $54 million, and the Australian Open allocated about $53 million.
