The United States Men’s Olympic Soccer Team: A Look at the Roster

The recently announced United States men’s Olympic soccer team roster for the upcoming tournament in Paris features an array of talented young players, along with three experienced “overage” players. Among the standout names included on the 18-player roster are Djordje Mihailovic, Miles Robinson, and Walker Zimmerman. Manager Marko Mitrović had the challenging task of assembling the team, taking into consideration age restrictions and player availability from various club teams.

In addition to the three overage players, the roster is also filled with promising talents like Gianluca Busio and Tanner Tessmann, who played pivotal roles in Venezia’s promotion to Serie A last season. Mitrović faced difficulties due to club teams not being obligated to release players for the Olympics, resulting in the absence of the majority of USMNT players who recently competed in the Copa América. However, the team still boasts significant experience, with 15 out of the 18 players having made appearances for the full U.S. men’s national team.

The last time the United States men’s team participated in the Olympics was in 2008, led by Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore. Despite narrowly missing out on the medal round, the current squad has the opportunity to make a strong showing after qualifying by winning the 2022 Concacaf Under-20 Championship. With a mix of MLS players and those plying their trade in Europe, the team is poised for an exciting campaign in Paris.

The U.S. men’s Olympic team will play all their group stage matches in Marseille, starting with the opener against host country France on July 24. Subsequent games against New Zealand and Guinea will follow, with the chance to progress to the medal round if they perform well. The quarterfinals could take place in either Paris or Bordeaux, leading up to the semifinals in Marseille and Décines-Charpieu, and ultimately the final in Paris on August 9.

Before kicking off their Olympic campaign, the team will train in Bordeaux at the home of Ligue 2 side Bordeaux from July 9-20. This preparation period will be crucial for building team chemistry and tactical cohesion. With a blend of youth and experience, along with the guidance of Mitrović, the U.S. will aim to make a statement at the Olympics and showcase the depth of talent within American soccer.

The United States men’s Olympic soccer team roster represents a mix of established stars and up-and-coming prospects, ready to compete on the international stage. The journey begins in Paris, where these players will have the opportunity to make a mark and demonstrate the future of American soccer. With high expectations and a sense of determination, the team is set to embark on an exciting adventure at the Olympics, with hopes of achieving success and bringing pride to their nation.
