NHL chief content officer Steve Mayer expressed that Hughes is eager to take part in the All-Star Game, stating, “I know that Jack wants to play in the All-Star Game really badly.” However, the league is still awaiting the final evaluation on his injury and has no concrete information regarding his availability for the event. Despite this uncertainty, the NHL remains hopeful that Hughes will be able to participate.
The anticipation surrounding Hughes’ participation stems from the significant role he was expected to play during the All-Star Weekend. He was set to co-captain one of the All-Star Game’s teams alongside his brother, Quinn Hughes, who plays as a defenseman for the Vancouver Canucks. The brothers were scheduled to draft their team during a televised event on Thursday night. Additionally, Jack Hughes was slated to take part in a revamped skills competition on Friday night, with a $1 million winner-take-all prize at stake.
Should Hughes be unable to compete on the ice, the NHL aims to maintain him as a team captain, ensuring the continuity of “Team Hughes.” Mayer emphasized the league’s desire to have Hughes present in Toronto, even if he cannot play, stating, “We want him to be here in Toronto… We’d like to keep Team Hughes [together] even if he doesn’t play.” Nevertheless, the final decision on Hughes’ participation will depend on the day-to-day evaluations of his injury. The NHL remains optimistic but recognizes the need to wait until the last possible moment before confirming his availability.
