The Dallas Cowboys are currently facing a major decision when it comes to their running back position. The return of Ezekiel Elliott, who played for the Cowboys from 2016-2022, is looking increasingly likely. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones has expressed interest in reuniting with Elliott, but has not confirmed if an agreement is in place. Despite meeting with Elliott and his agent earlier in the week to discuss the potential reunion, Jones remains cautious in his approach.
During the recent NFL draft, the Cowboys opted not to select a running back in the first three rounds. When asked about this decision, Jones hinted that the draft is not over and that the team is still evaluating their options. The lack of urgency in drafting a running back may suggest the Cowboys’ comfort level with the current players on their roster. However, Jones also emphasized the team’s interest in seeing how the future unfolds with Elliott in the mix.
Despite Jones’ confidence in Elliott’s ability to be a starting-level running back, there are concerns about his recent performance. In the 2022 season, Elliott recorded a career-low 642 rushing yards on 184 carries with three touchdowns. While he led the team in receptions with 51 catches for 313 yards and two scores, his rushing numbers were less than stellar. A significant increase in workload towards the end of the season may have contributed to Elliott’s decline in production.
The Cowboys lost Tony Pollard, their leading rusher in the last two seasons, to free agency. Despite re-signing Rico Dowdle and adding veteran Royce Freeman to the roster, there are still questions about the depth at the running back position. With promising young players like Deuce Vaughn, Malik Davis, and Snoop Conner in the mix, Elliott’s role in the team remains uncertain.
Throughout his tenure with the Cowboys, Elliott has established himself as one of the most productive running backs in team history. With 8,262 rushing yards, he ranks third in team history behind legends like Emmitt Smith and Tony Dorsett. Despite leading the NFL in rushing in 2016 and 2018, Elliott has struggled to surpass the 1,000-yard mark since 2020. His accomplishments include being named an All-Pro once and earning three Pro Bowl selections.
