In a landmark decision, NFL owners voted 29-3 in favor of revamping the kickoff play for the upcoming 2024 season. The changes, which were proposed by New Orleans Saints special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi, are intended to breathe new life into a play that has been declining in recent years. With a focus on increasing the return rate while simultaneously lowering concussion rates, the new alignment rules are set to revolutionize the kickoff play.
The NFL has been grappling with a decline in kickoff returns over the past decade, with touchback rates on the rise and return rates hitting a record low of 21.7% in 2023. In an effort to address this issue, the league has implemented several rule changes over the years, such as moving the kickoff line from the 30-yard line to the 35-yard line and outlawing certain blocking techniques. However, the rate of concussions per kickoff has remained relatively constant despite these changes.
Under the new rules set to take effect in 2024, kickers will continue to kick from the 35-yard line. However, the other 10 players on the kickoff team will now line up at the receiving team’s 40-yard line, while at least nine members of the return team will be positioned in a “setup zone” between the 35- and 30-yard lines. Up to two returners can line up in a “landing zone” between the goal line and the 20-yard line.
One of the most significant alterations is the elimination of fair catches on kickoffs, as well as the requirement for teams to inform officials if they intend to attempt an onside kick. This change aims to make the kickoff play more competitive and entertaining for fans, while also ensuring player safety remains a top priority.
The new kickoff rules draw inspiration from the XFL, a former professional football league known for its innovative approach to the game. While the NFL version differs slightly in player alignment, the overall philosophy remains the same. In the XFL, more than 90% of kickoffs were returned, and NFL special teams coaches are hopeful that the return rate will increase to at least 80% in 2024.
Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell voiced his support for the changes, noting that they would help address the significant reduction in special teams plays in recent years. The elimination of certain tackle techniques and the introduction of extra challenges are also part of the broader effort to enhance the overall game experience for both players and fans.
The NFL’s approval of the new kickoff rules marks a significant milestone in the league’s ongoing efforts to enhance player safety and increase the competitiveness of the game.
