The world champion Red Bull Racing team had initially intended to construct a state-of-the-art wind tunnel facility at its base. The team believed that this new facility was crucial in order to stay at the forefront of Formula 1 car development in the long term. A suitable site near its technology campus was identified, and the team had already applied for planning permission to proceed with the construction. However, due to significant ongoing developments in Milton Keynes – including the establishment of the Red Bull Powertrains facility and further expansion of their factory – the team has decided to relocate the planned wind tunnel to a more appropriate location.
This shift in location means that the original planning permission is now invalid and has been withdrawn. As a result, the team will need to prepare fresh paperwork to be submitted for approval. While this new process will inevitably introduce delays, Red Bull remains confident that the change of location will not significantly impact the timeline for the wind tunnel’s completion. In fact, the facility is expected to be operational in time for the development of the team’s 2026 car.
Since Red Bull’s entry into Formula 1 following its acquisition of the Jaguar team in 2004, the team has relied on an upgraded facility in Bedford as its official wind tunnel. Originally designed at the close of World War 2 for aircraft development, this wind tunnel had previously been used by the Arrows team. However, the decision to build a new wind tunnel was one of the final choices made by Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateshitz before his passing last year.
Red Bull Racing’s Team Principal, Christian Horner, expressed his satisfaction with the level of support the team is receiving. He confirmed the approval of the new wind tunnel project by both shareholders, highlighting the team’s commitment to investing in cutting-edge facilities and transforming their campus into a technology hub aimed at attracting and nurturing top talent. Horner acknowledged the crucial role of their personnel in the team’s success and emphasized their technical proficiency. While confident in their operational strength, Horner also acknowledged that there is always room for improvement.
Red Bull Racing’s decision to slightly shift the location of their new wind tunnel facility represents an adjustment aimed at ensuring optimal conditions for their cutting-edge car development. While the change requires fresh planning permission, the team remains confident that the revised timeline will not significantly hamper their progress. With a strong commitment to investing in state-of-the-art facilities and their exceptional pool of technical expertise, Red Bull Racing is poised for continued success in Formula 1.
