The Minnesota Wild, already dealing with multiple injuries, received another blow as defenseman Jared Spurgeon was moved to injured reserve on Wednesday. The team had earlier made the same decision with their leading scorer Kirill Kaprizov. Spurgeon, who has been struggling with a lower-body injury all season, joins a growing list of injured players for the Wild.
The specific details of Spurgeon’s injury were not disclosed by the team. However, it is evident that he has been battling through the injury for an extended period. This marks the third time this season that the 34-year-old captain has been sidelined. After missing the entire month of October, Spurgeon returned to action in November but missed an additional seven games in December before making a comeback. In his limited playing time, Spurgeon has managed to score five points while averaging more than 23 minutes of ice time.
To compensate for Spurgeon’s absence, the Wild called up defenseman Daemon Hunt from their AHL affiliate, the Iowa Wild. Hunt will have big shoes to fill as Spurgeon’s presence is crucial for the team’s defensive stability. The Wild have been dealing with various injuries throughout the season, with key players such as Jonas Brodin, Filip Gustavsson, Marcus Foligno, and Mats Zuccarello also on the sidelines.
Despite their injury struggles, the Wild are determined to secure a playoff position in the highly competitive Western Conference. Currently, they trail the Arizona Coyotes by four points for the final wild-card spot. The Wild have been regular playoff contenders, aiming to make their fifth consecutive postseason appearance.
In an effort to turn their season around, the Wild made a coaching change in November. Dean Evason was let go, and former Nashville Predators coach John Hynes was brought in to lead the team. Under Hynes’ guidance, the Wild have recorded 11 wins, the second-highest in the NHL during that time. This displays the team’s resilience and ability to overcome adversity.
The injuries to key players have undoubtedly hampered the Wild’s progress this season. Kaprizov’s absence deprives the team of their top scorer, and Spurgeon’s defensive contributions will be sorely missed. Additionally, players like Brodin, Gustavsson, Foligno, and Zuccarello bring vital skills and experience to the team but are currently unable to contribute due to their injuries.
In order to secure a playoff spot, the Wild will need to rely on their depth and the remaining healthy players to step up and fill the void left by their injured teammates. It will be a challenging task, but the team remains determined to overcome the obstacles and extend their postseason streak. With the guidance of Coach Hynes and the resilience of the players, the Wild are hoping to defy the odds and clinch a playoff spot once again.
