The Miami Heat has announced their plans to commemorate franchise legend Dwyane Wade with a bronze statue outside the Kaseya Center later this year. This announcement comes after last year’s halftime ceremony during the Heat’s 104-87 victory over the Charlotte Hornets, where Wade’s enshrinement in the Basketball Hall of Fame was celebrated. Team president Pat Riley expressed his admiration for Wade and his impact on the franchise, stating, “When we retired his jersey in February 2020, I said Dwyane was the face of this franchise forever and I meant it. Dwyane’s legacy is a towering one not only for the Miami Heat but for Miami-Wade county. I can’t think of a better way to honor him than by memorializing that legacy.”
To create the statue, the Heat has enlisted the sculpting expertise of Omri Amrany and Oscar Leon. Amrany, renowned for his work on statues of basketball icons Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, Dirk Nowitzki, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, will be joined by Leon to capture Wade’s likeness and essence. The unveiling of the statue is scheduled for the fall of 2024, promising an awe-inspiring tribute to an unforgettable player.
Dwyane Wade’s contribution to the Miami Heat is undeniably significant. Throughout his 16-year career, with 15 of those years spent in Miami, Wade etched his name into the franchise’s history by holding multiple records for points, assists, steals, games played, and minutes played. Accompanied by three championships and a Finals MVP award in 2006, Wade’s impact resonates deeply within Miami and its passionate fan base.
During the halftime ceremony last year, Wade expressed his gratitude and connection to the city, stating, “I was born and raised in Chicago, but this is where I grew up. From 21 years old ’til 37, I grew up here. A lot of the fan base, they grew up with me. … There’s no love like Miami love, and every time I come back here I feel that.” These heartfelt words encapsulate the profound bond between the player and the city that witnessed his growth and triumph.
In addition to honoring Dwyane Wade with a bronze statue, the Miami Heat will also retire Udonis Haslem’s No. 40 jersey in their next home game against the Brooklyn Nets on Friday. Haslem, a beloved figure in the Heat organization, has demonstrated unwavering loyalty and dedication throughout his career, solidifying his place in the franchise’s history alongside Wade.
As the Miami Heat prepares to immortalize Dwyane Wade’s legacy through the craftsmanship of talented sculptors, fans eagerly anticipate the unveiling of the bronze statue. This monumental tribute will stand as a testament to Wade’s brilliance on the court, his unrivaled impact on the Miami Heat, and the enduring love between the player, the team, and the city.
