The Las Vegas Raiders Rumored to Hire Tom Telesco as New GM

The Las Vegas Raiders are reportedly in talks to hire Tom Telesco as their new General Manager. After the Chargers’ disappointing loss to the Raiders in December, Telesco, along with coach Brandon Staley, faced the consequences of their underwhelming performance and were relieved of their duties. As the former Chargers’ General Manager since 2013, Tom Telesco contributed to the development of the team’s roster, drafting notable players such as Keenan Allen, Melvin Gordon III, Joey Bosa, Derwin James Jr., Justin Herbert, Kenneth Murray Jr., and Tuli Tuipulotu. Despite his draft successes, Telesco’s teams consistently fell short of expectations in the AFC West.

Throughout his tenure, Telesco demonstrated a penchant for aggressive moves in free agency and the trade market. He acquired players like Khalil Mack through trades and signed All-Pro cornerback J.C. Jackson to a lucrative contract. However, some of his bold moves backfired, with the most notable misstep being the Jackson signing. Unfortunately, Jackson played only seven games for the Chargers and earned a staggering $38.5 million during that brief period. Telesco openly acknowledged this mistake and personally apologized to the team’s defensive backs. The Jackson signing ultimately marked the end of Telesco’s major moves with the Chargers.

Under Telesco’s leadership, the Chargers achieved a record of 84-92, including three playoff appearances with a 2-3 record. Throughout his tenure, the Chargers had three different head coaches, having relocated from San Diego to Los Angeles in 2017. Now, as Telesco potentially joins the Raiders, he would be working alongside head coach Antonio Pierce, who recently transitioned from interim to full-time head coach. The Raiders also recently appointed interim GM Champ Kelly, who may be replaced by Telesco.

A New Direction for the Raiders:

In the 2021 season, the Raiders finished with an 8-9 record, missing the playoffs for the sixth consecutive year. The team now faces significant decisions, particularly regarding their offense and the quarterback position. The current veteran quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, was benched after Pierce’s promotion as head coach. Garoppolo’s future with the team is uncertain, and the Raiders must determine whether to cut or trade him. While rookie Aidan O’Connell displayed promise towards the end of the season, he may not possess the necessary mobility and consistency to be the long-term starter.

With the 13th draft pick, the Raiders face the challenge of securing a top-tier quarterback prospect. However, prominent prospects like Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels are expected to be drafted early. Therefore, Telesco must evaluate alternative options such as trading for a veteran quarterback or exploring the free agency market. Notable quarterbacks like Kirk Cousins, Baker Mayfield, and Jameis Winston will be available during the offseason.

Aside from addressing the quarterback situation, Telesco will also play a crucial role in determining the Raiders’ new offensive coordinator. Additionally, he must evaluate the performance of running back Josh Jacobs, who experienced a decline in productivity during the 2021 season. Jacobs faced setbacks due to injuries and his refusal to participate in the team’s offseason activities after the franchise tag was imposed on him. Despite these challenges, Jacobs remains a favorite of owner Mark Davis and head coach Antonio Pierce.

If the Raiders secure Tom Telesco as their new General Manager, he will become the team’s fifth GM since Mark Davis assumed control in 2011. The franchise hopes that Telesco’s experience and decision-making will help propel the team towards success. With the promise of a more capable front office, the Raiders aim to rectify their recent playoff drought and contend for a Super Bowl appearance.
