Golden State Warriors star guard, Stephen Curry, has reached an agreement on a one-year, $62.6 million extension with his agent, Jeff Austin of Octagon, confirming the news to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. This deal ensures that Curry will remain under contract with the Warriors until the 2026-27 season. By signing this extension, Curry joins the elite group of NBA players who have surpassed $500 million in career earnings, alongside LeBron James and Kevin Durant. It is important to note that Curry still had two years left on his previous four-year, $215.4 million contract, which he signed in August 2021. The NBA’s over-38 rule limited Curry to only a one-year extension this offseason, as it prohibits teams from offering contracts longer than four years to players who are 38 years old or will be during the deal.
Throughout his career, Curry has been vocal about his desire to stay with the Golden State Warriors, the team where he has spent his entire NBA journey. He expressed his commitment to the franchise in an interview with Andscape in July, stating, “I’ve always said I want to be a Warrior for life.” This sentiment aligns with his current extension, solidifying his loyalty to the organization. While Curry hopes to retire as a Warrior, he also emphasized the importance of remaining part of a competitive team. With his exceptional talent and leadership, Curry aims to chase more championships while continuing to elevate his game.
For the Warriors, leveraging Curry’s remaining prime years has been a top priority during the offseason. The team underwent retooling and roster revamping to maximize their competitiveness. Warriors general manager, Mike Dunleavy, expressed confidence in securing Curry for additional years, acknowledging his pivotal role in the team’s success. Despite the departure of Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks, Golden State plans to build around Curry and veteran Draymond Green, while integrating young talents like Jonathan Kuminga, Brandin Podziemski, and Trayce Jackson-Davis. Kuminga, in his fourth season, is eligible for a significant extension, highlighting the team’s investment in young prospects. Additionally, the Warriors have reinforced their supporting cast with players like Buddy Hield, Kyle Anderson, and De’Anthony Melton to complement Curry’s leadership on and off the court.
Stephen Curry’s illustrious career includes multiple accolades such as being a 10-time All-Star, a two-time MVP, a one-time Finals MVP, and an Olympic gold medalist. His contributions have played a vital role in the Warriors’ four NBA championships, establishing him as one of the greatest shooters and playmakers in league history. As Curry embarks on this contract extension, both he and the Warriors aim to continue their legacy of success while setting new milestones in the seasons ahead.
