Recently, Smith Entertainment Group announced the six potential nicknames for Utah’s new NHL franchise, set to begin playing in the 2024-25 season. The finalists, which include Utah Blizzard, Utah Hockey Club (Utah HC), Utah Mammoth, Utah Outlaws, Utah Venom, and Utah Yeti, were chosen after a round of fan voting. Over 520,000 votes were cast, with more than 60% of them supporting these six options. Fans have until June 20 to vote for their favorite name, showing the importance of fan engagement in the branding process of a new sports team.
The team’s jerseys in the inaugural season will feature “UTAH” prominently displayed across the front, showcasing the franchise’s connection to the state and its commitment to the local fan base. This deliberate choice highlights the team’s roots within Utah and aims to create a strong bond with the community from the start. It’s a smart move to establish a sense of identity and pride early on, as it can help in building a loyal fan following for years to come.
The Utah NHL team is the result of the relocation of the former Arizona Coyotes, who struggled to secure a suitable arena for their games. After the NHL had to step in and facilitate the sale of the franchise to Ryan Smith, owner of the NBA’s Utah Jazz, the team found a new home in Utah. Playing out of the Jazz’s Delta Arena for the upcoming season, the venue will undergo renovations to accommodate hockey games effectively. This transition marks a new chapter for the franchise, with a fresh start and new opportunities in Utah.
With the name of the franchise soon to be decided, Smith Entertainment Group will focus on creating a logo, mascot, and overall branding that align with the chosen identity. The new look and feel of the team, set to debut in the 2025-26 season, will reflect the unique spirit of Utah and resonate with fans across the state. This branding process is crucial in establishing a cohesive and memorable image for the franchise, helping to attract supporters, sponsors, and create a strong presence in the NHL.
The future looks promising for Utah’s upcoming NHL team. With a strong foundation based on fan input, state representation, and a new brand identity, the franchise is poised for success both on and off the ice. As the team prepares to make its debut, all eyes will be on Utah and its journey towards becoming a respected and beloved member of the NHL community.
