The Controversial Suspension of Morgan Rielly: A Deep Dive Analysis

The NHL commissioner Gary Bettman made a decision to uphold a five-game suspension for Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly. This suspension stems from a cross-check against Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig during a game in February. Rielly’s actions occurred in the closing seconds of the game and he was immediately penalized with a match penalty and game misconduct.

After the initial suspension was handed down, Rielly appealed the decision to Bettman. The Leafs argued that Rielly’s lack of history with supplementary discipline, the fact that Greig was not injured, and the severity of the suspension in comparison to others warranted a reduction in the ban. However, Bettman ultimately decided to uphold the five-game suspension. He noted that Rielly did not aim at Greig’s head, but still added force to the cross-check.

In his assessment, Bettman emphasized that Rielly’s actions were not accidental, reflexive, or done in self-defense. He pointed out that Rielly had time to consider his actions before delivering the blow to Greig. Additionally, Bettman acknowledged Rielly’s lack of prior disciplinary issues and the fact that Greig was not injured. However, he made it clear that if either of those factors had been different, the suspension would have been much longer.

Rielly’s camp argued for a shorter suspension based on comparables with other incidents in the league. However, Bettman found that the level of force used by Rielly against Greig was not reflected in the other cases presented. Therefore, the argument for a reduction in the ban on these grounds was not successful.

Bettman concluded by praising Rielly for disavowing public commentary that suggested Greig deserved the cross-check. He expressed hope that this incident was an aberration and would not be repeated. Rielly, who has been having a strong season with the Leafs, will miss a total of five games due to the suspension. Toronto has managed to maintain a perfect record in his absence, but the impact of his absence on the team remains to be seen.
