In a move aimed at strengthening their frontcourt, the Boston Celtics have acquired Xavier Tillman from the Memphis Grizzlies. Sources have informed ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski that the Celtics traded two second-round picks to secure the services of the 25-year-old big man. This transaction provides Boston with much-needed depth as they enter the crucial stretch of the season.
As part of the deal, the Grizzlies will receive the Atlanta Hawks’ 2027 second-round pick and the Dallas Mavericks’ 2030 second-round selection. Additionally, forward Lamar Stevens will join Memphis. The Celtics made a shrewd move, leveraging their future assets to acquire Tillman, who has shown considerable potential despite some shooting struggles this season.
Through 34 games in the current campaign, Tillman has averaged a modest 6 points and 4.6 rebounds for the Grizzlies. However, his value extends beyond these numbers. While his shooting percentages leave room for improvement, with a 40.8% field goal percentage and a disappointing 22.6% from beyond the arc, Tillman compensates with his presence on the defensive end of the floor.
Tillman has established himself as a formidable force inside the paint, averaging 1.2 steals and 1.0 blocks in just 20 minutes of play. In joining the Celtics, he will add to their defensive prowess, alongside established frontcourt players such as Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, and Luke Kornet.
Continuing the Trend
This trade mirrors a similar move made by the Celtics last season when they acquired Mike Muscala from the Oklahoma City Thunder prior to the trade deadline. Boston has demonstrated a willingness to prioritize depth in their frontcourt, recognizing its significance in a league increasingly focused on interior play.
While the Celtics improve their immediate prospects with the Tillman acquisition, the Grizzlies have their eyes on the future. By trading Tillman, Memphis adds to their collection of potential future assets. This move follows their recent trade of center Steven Adams to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Victor Oladipo and three second-round picks. These transactions not only help the Grizzlies build for the future but also allow them the financial flexibility to further develop their roster.
Lamar Stevens, the 26-year-old forward, will find himself in a new environment after joining the Grizzlies. Stevens signed with the Celtics during the offseason after spending three seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers. While his production has been modest, averaging 2.8 points across 19 games, this change of scenery may provide him with opportunities to showcase his skills and contribute to the Grizzlies’ growth.
The Celtics have strengthened their frontcourt with the acquisition of Xavier Tillman. His defensive prowess and potential for offensive improvement make him a valuable addition to the team. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies continue their strategic approach by collecting future assets while giving Lamar Stevens an opportunity to prove himself in a new setting. The impact of this trade will play out on the court in the upcoming stretch of the season, where the Celtics aim to solidify their position among the league’s elite.
