Scott Arniel Named Head Coach of Winnipeg Jets

Scott Arniel, a former player for the Winnipeg Jets in the 1980s, has been appointed as the new head coach of the team. Despite interviewing other candidates, Arniel was a front runner for the position due to his previous experience with the franchise, the city, and his tenure as an associate coach for the past two seasons.

Arniel, aged 61, took on the role of interim head coach for the Jets during three absences by Rick Bowness, the former head coach. In his interim capacity, Arniel led the team to a strong 15-7-3 record over a span of 25 games between the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. Prior to joining the Jets, Arniel served as the head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2010 to 2012, before being replaced midseason.

In addition to his experience as a head coach, Arniel has also served as an assistant coach for various NHL teams including the Buffalo Sabres, New York Rangers, and Washington Capitals. He was also the head coach of the Manitoba Moose of the AHL from 2006 to 2010. With a wealth of experience both on and off the ice, Arniel brings a unique perspective to the Winnipeg Jets.

Drafted by the previous incarnation of the Jets in 1981, Arniel played six seasons as a forward in Winnipeg and went on to play a total of 730 games in the NHL with the Jets, Sabres, and Boston Bruins. His experience as a player gives him valuable insight into the game and the dynamics of a successful team.

Under the guidance of Rick Bowness, the Jets finished second in the Central Division with 110 points, showcasing a strong performance throughout the season. However, they faced an early elimination in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, losing to the Colorado Avalanche in five games. Despite the setback, general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff praised the coaching staff for their efforts and noted the consistency they brought to the team.

With the appointment of Scott Arniel as head coach of the Winnipeg Jets, there are now two remaining coaching vacancies in the NHL, with the San Jose Sharks and the Seattle Kraken still in search of their new leaders.

Overall, Scott Arniel’s appointment brings a mix of playing and coaching experience to the Winnipeg Jets, setting the stage for an exciting new chapter for the team. His understanding of the game and his dedication to the franchise make him a valuable asset as they look to build on their past successes and strive for even greater achievements in the future.
