Brewers principal owner Mark Attanasio recently expressed optimism about the ongoing negotiations regarding renovations to American Family Field and emphasized his desire to ensure that the team remains in Milwaukee. The Brewers have called American Family Field their home since 2001 and currently have a lease that expires in 2030. Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, a Democrat, proposed a plan that involves the state spending $290 million on repairs, with the Brewers extending their lease by 13 years until 2043. On the other hand, Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos considered this plan unacceptable, as he believed a longer commitment from the Brewers was necessary to ensure the team’s continued presence in Milwaukee.
Speaking from American Family Field before Saturday’s game with San Diego, Attanasio expressed his optimism, stating, “I’m optimistic. We just have to get the three constituencies – which would be the governor, the Assembly and the Senate – to come together.” He believes that a consensus can eventually be reached, emphasizing the good chemistry between the team’s representatives and the politicians involved. Attanasio’s main objective is to secure the team’s future in Milwaukee for generations to come, potentially discussing an extension to 2050.
The Brewers’ lease currently dictates that the Southeast Wisconsin Professional Baseball Park District is responsible for covering repairs. However, both Evers and the team have acknowledged that the district does not have sufficient funds to cover the necessary renovations. Evers’ proposed solution involves using a one-time cash payment from a projected $7 million state budget surplus to fund the repairs. Attanasio recognizes the financial realities and the urgent need to address the infrastructure’s future before it falls into disrepair.
Above all, Attanasio emphasized the Brewers’ commitment to remaining in Milwaukee. He stated, “We very much want to stay here. That’s all I’ve considered at this point.” The team recognizes the importance of the stadium to the city and aims to secure its long-term future. Attanasio highlighted the beauty of American Family Field but also pointed out that the infrastructure, including the scoreboard, becomes outdated quickly. If action is not taken, the district will face financial constraints within the next few years. The team aims to address these challenges proactively rather than opting for temporary fixes.
