McLaren’s Technical Restructuring: Empowering the Team for Success

When Andreas Seidl left McLaren to lead Audi’s 2026 entry with Sauber, he left behind a team that needed a fresh perspective to continue its journey towards success. Andreas Stella took over as the new Team Principal last winter, and one of his first major decisions was to restructure the technical departments. One of the most essential moves in the restructuring process was the overhaul of the aero department, led by Peter Prodromou. Stella acknowledges the crucial role played by Prodromou and his team in McLaren’s improved performance during the 2023 season. Their mid-season upgrades propelled the team to beat Aston Martin and secure fourth place in the constructors’ standings. The restructuring allowed Prodromou to take charge of the aerodynamic direction, supported by the talented Giuseppe Pesce.

The restructured technical configuration included three technical directors: Peter Prodromou for aero, David Sanchez for performance and concepts, and Rob Marshall for engineering and design. While McLaren awaits the official start of Marshall and Ferrari’s David Sanchez in January, Stella emphasizes that the progress achieved in the second half of the year was due to the existing team’s efforts. The nine podium finishes by Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, as well as Piastri’s sprint win in Qatar, showcased the team’s abilities before the restructuring.

While McLaren’s technical restructuring brought in new hires to strengthen the team’s ranks, Stella emphasizes that the existing talent was instrumental in their recent successes. Its new wind tunnel, which became operational in the summer, only played a role in the development of the 2024 car project. The physical design of the car’s geometries remained in the hands of the same dedicated individuals. However, the restructuring served as a catalyst for unleashing their talents by providing clear direction, objectives, empowerment, and fostering enthusiasm within the team.
