Liverpool Denied Penalty in 1-1 Draw Against Manchester City: Klopp Questions VAR Decision

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp expressed his frustration after his team was denied a clear penalty in the 1-1 draw against Manchester City at Anfield. Klopp questioned the VAR decision made by Stuart Attwell, particularly after Alexis Mac Allister was on the receiving end of a chest-high challenge by Manchester City’s Jérémie Doku in the 99th minute of the match. Klopp was left baffled by the VAR officials’ failure to review the incident properly and make the right call. The Liverpool manager was vocal about his disappointment, questioning what Attwell had “for lunch” that day.

Despite Mac Allister’s second-half penalty that helped Liverpool secure a point after falling behind to John Stones’ goal in the first half, the Merseyside club could have potentially won the game had VAR intervened correctly. Referee Michael Oliver was not asked to review Doku’s challenge on Mac Allister, even though Attwell and assistant VAR Nick Hopton had assessed the incident. Klopp was adamant that it was a clear penalty and criticized the VAR officials for their decision-making. The Liverpool manager was left pondering the reasoning behind the VAR’s failure to spot what seemed like an obvious foul.

Klopp reiterated his belief that the challenge on Mac Allister was a blatant penalty and expressed his frustration with the outcome. He was confident that the majority of people watching the match agreed with his assessment of the incident. Despite feeling hard done by the VAR decision, Klopp maintained that the most important thing was Liverpool’s ability to play quality football. The draw against City kept Liverpool just one point ahead of their rivals but still trailing leaders Arsenal in the title race.

Klopp commended his team’s performance against City, particularly highlighting their resilience and determination in securing a point at Anfield. Despite missing key players due to injury, Liverpool put up a strong showing and impressed Klopp with their display. The German manager praised his team for the exceptional effort they put in, especially in the second half of the match. Klopp was proud of Liverpool’s performance and believed that they showed they were deserving of being at the top of the table.

On the other hand, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola acknowledged the challenge of playing at Anfield and praised Liverpool for their competitive spirit. Guardiola described the match as a “tsunami” that his team had to weather in order to secure a point. The City manager recognized Liverpool’s strength and the intensity of the rivalry between the two clubs. Guardiola also credited Liverpool for their outstanding performance and admitted that City found it difficult to cope with their opponents’ pressure.

The 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Manchester City was marked by VAR controversy, with Klopp questioning the decision not to award his team a penalty. Despite the disappointment, Klopp was proud of Liverpool’s performance and vowed to continue fighting for the title. Guardiola, on the other hand, acknowledged the tough challenge posed by Liverpool and praised their competitiveness. The draw keeps the title race alive and sets the stage for an exciting battle at the top of the table.
