Gavin Lux Faces Uphill Battle in Becoming the Dodgers’ Everyday Shortstop

Gavin Lux, the 26-year-old infielder, is facing doubts regarding his ability to step into the role of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ regular shortstop this upcoming season. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has not committed to Lux as the starting shortstop, emphasizing the importance of performance in determining who will fill the position.

Lux’s path to securing the starting shortstop role was derailed last season due to a knee injury that sidelined him for the entire year. Now back to full health, Lux is struggling defensively, committing errors on ground balls and facing challenges with throwing accuracy. Roberts acknowledges that Lux needs time to readjust to the speed of the major leagues after his extended absence.

Despite defensive struggles, Lux has shown promise at the plate during spring training, boasting a batting average of .348 and a .423 on-base percentage in eight games. However, Lux’s offensive contributions may not be enough to secure his spot as the starting shortstop, especially with limited opportunities to play designated hitter due to Shohei Ohtani’s presence in that role this season.

Veteran Miguel Rojas filled in at shortstop for the Dodgers last season, providing solid defense despite limited offensive output. Rojas’s performance highlights the importance of defensive reliability at the position, a factor that may work against Lux in his bid for the starting role.

With Opening Day rapidly approaching on March 20th against the San Diego Padres in South Korea, the Dodgers face a time crunch in determining their starting shortstop. Lux’s defensive struggles and the presence of competition from players like Rojas make his path to becoming the everyday shortstop a challenging one. As the season opener draws near, Lux must showcase significant improvement to solidify his standing within the team.
