FIFA’s disciplinary committee has taken action against Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish FA (RFEF), following his inappropriate behavior towards Women’s World Cup winner Jenni Hermoso. Rubiales kissed Hermoso without her consent while presenting the players with their medals after Spain defeated England 1-0 in the final on Sunday. This incident has caused outrage within and outside Spain, leading to disciplinary proceedings against Rubiales.
FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has informed Rubiales that it is initiating disciplinary proceedings against him based on the events that took place during the final. The committee believes that Rubiales’ actions may constitute violations of Article 13 paragraphs 1 and 2 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. However, further information regarding these disciplinary proceedings will only be provided once a final decision has been made. FIFA has reiterated its commitment to respecting the integrity of all individuals and strongly condemns any behavior that goes against this principle.
The backlash against Rubiales is growing, not only for the unsolicited kiss on the lips of Jenni Hermoso but also for other inappropriate actions he exhibited. Rubiales has faced criticism for grabbing his crotch, hugging, and kissing other players on their cheeks, as well as throwing Athenea del Castillo over his shoulder. Initially, Rubiales dismissed the critics, referring to them as “idiots.” However, he later posted a video apologizing for his behavior. Despite this apology, Spain’s Acting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez deemed it insufficient and inadequate. Various government ministers have called for Rubiales’ resignation, and several institutions, including the Spanish Players’ Association (AFE), FUTPRO, Liga F, and FIFPRO, have denounced his actions.
Jenni Hermoso, who plays for Pachuca in Liga MX, has entrusted FUTPRO and her agency, TMJ, to handle the issue. FUTPRO has described the incidents involving Rubiales as acts that should never go unpunished. They have pledged to work towards sanctioning Rubiales and implementing measures to protect players against such unacceptable actions.
The repercussions of Rubiales’ behavior are set to be discussed in a meeting held by the RFEF on Friday. Given the growing pressure and condemnation surrounding Rubiales, his position as the president of the Spanish FA is under increasing threat. It remains to be seen what course of action the RFEF will take in light of these developments.
FIFA’s decision to open disciplinary proceedings against Luis Rubiales demonstrates their commitment to maintaining the integrity of the sport and addressing misconduct. Rubiales’ inappropriate behavior towards Jenni Hermoso has sparked widespread criticism and calls for accountability. The outcome of these proceedings and the actions taken by the RFEF will determine the future of Rubiales’ position as the president of the Spanish FA.
