When it comes to power punchers in boxing, many names come to mind. Mike Tyson, Joe Louis, Ernie Shavers, and George Foreman are just a few of the notable fighters known for their devastating punches. However, in my opinion, none of them can compare to the sheer power of former WBC world heavyweight titlist, Deontay Wilder. Having watched boxing since the late seventies and with a genuine interest in boxing history, I have never seen anyone hit as hard as Wilder. His punches are not only powerful but also seemingly come out of nowhere, making them even more dangerous and frightening to witness.
As a fan, I would love to see Wilder face off against Tyson Fury for a fourth time. The previous three bouts between the two fighters were incredibly competitive, showcasing the intense rivalry and skill of both athletes. It is worth noting that in boxing history, we have seen how a legendary fourth fight can unfold. Remember when Juan Manuel Marquez caught Manny Pacquiao in their fourth fight and put the Filipino legend down and out? It was a final act that will forever be etched in boxing history. With this in mind, a fourth fight between Wilder and Fury could hold the same potential for greatness.
However, before Wilder can think about vying for a world title once again, he needs to step back into the ring. It is disheartening to realize that Wilder has not fought since October 15th of last year, meaning it has been over twelve months since his last fight. What’s more, that fight lasted less than a minute. Robert Helenius, his opponent that night, didn’t even have a chance to last a full minute before Wilder sent him into slumber land. Since then, there has been plenty of talk but little action.
Fellow former titlists Andy Ruiz and Anthony Joshua are often mentioned as potential opponents for Wilder. On paper, these matchups look promising and could generate significant excitement among boxing fans. However, for reasons unknown, these fights are not materializing. Time is not on Wilder’s side either. As he approaches forty, he must be aware that his body’s physical attributes may decline, despite age typically being less of a concern in the heavyweight division. This situation is frustrating for Wilder, who undoubtedly wants to get back into the ring and prove his worth as a world-class competitor.
Sadly, Wilder’s biggest adversary right now is not Fury, Ruiz, or Joshua; it is the debilitating politics that plague the boxing industry. It is disheartening to witness a boxing legend like Wilder being held back from the opportunities he deserves. The fans, too, suffer from this situation, longing to witness the return of this remarkable athlete. We can only hope that Wilder will make a comeback sooner rather than later and that the politics of boxing will no longer obstruct his path to redemption.
