COTA Grand Prix Recap: Alonso Dominates in Moto3, Garcia Clinches Victory in Moto2

The chaotic 14-lap Moto3 Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas was a showcase of dominance for Aspar rider Alonso. Starting from pole position, the Colombian rider grabbed the holeshot into the first corner and quickly built a lead of over four seconds ahead of the chasing pack. Despite being reeled in towards the end of the race, a crash for Collin Veijer forced other riders to take avoiding action, allowing Alonso to extend his lead and ultimately cross the finish line 5.163 seconds ahead of second-placed Daniel Holgado.

Holgado, who finished just 0.013s ahead of Angel Piqueras in third, celebrated his first podium in just his third Grand Prix race. Ryusei Yamanaka narrowly missed out on the podium in fourth place, followed by David Munoz and Tatsuki Suzuki in fifth and sixth respectively. Even with serving three long lap penalties, Matteo Bertelle managed to secure a top 10 finish in tenth place.

At the end of the race, Holgado emerged as the current championship leader with a two-point advantage over Alonso. Joel Kelso follows behind, 37 points adrift, while last year’s COTA Moto3 winner Ivan Ortola trails by 42 points after being ruled out of the Grand Prix due to crashes.

Moto2 Recap

In the Moto2 category, MT Helmets – MSI’s Garcia secured the holeshot and went on to claim his first victory in the class. Despite two late errors at Turn 11, the Spaniard maintained his composure and crossed the finish line 0.492 seconds ahead of second-placed Joe Roberts from the American Racing squad.

Fermin Aldeguer rebounded from a poor start to finish third on his Speed Up-run bike, completing the podium. Alonso Lopez and Marcos Ramirez finished fourth and fifth respectively, while Dennis Foggia, Ai Ogura, Jeremy Alcoba, Aron Canet, and Celestino Vietti rounded out the top 10.

Poleman Canet struggled throughout the race and was handed a time penalty for gaining an advantage by running off track. With this victory, Garcia now leads the championship by two points over Roberts, with Lopez and Canet tied in third place, 13 points behind the leader. Aldeguer sits in seventh place, 22 points adrift from the top spot.

The Moto3 and Moto2 races at the Circuit of the Americas provided fans with thrilling battles and unexpected outcomes. Alonso’s dominant display in Moto3 and Garcia’s maiden victory in Moto2 added another layer of excitement to the weekend’s racing action. As the championship standings continue to evolve, it remains to be seen who will emerge as the ultimate victors in this highly competitive season.
