The first post, made during Fritz’s match against Alexander Zverev, featured a picture of Fritz on the court with the caption “cheer loud ladies.” The second post, a video of Riddle celebrating after Fritz’s victory, had the caption “when ur man wins 4 the girls.”
Many on social media interpreted Riddle’s posts as a jab at Zverev in reference to the allegations of domestic abuse made by two of his former partners. This interpretation caused the posts to quickly gain traction, leading to Riddle deleting them after the backlash they received. In response to the controversy, Riddle clarified that the posts were not about anything off the tennis court and that there was no ill intent behind them.
Following Fritz’s victory over Zverev, the two players had an extended conversation at the net. Zverev later expressed his displeasure with the cheering coming from Fritz’s player box during the match, particularly as he was struggling with an injury. Riddle was seated in Fritz’s box during the match, adding fuel to the controversy.
Despite Zverev’s complaints about the cheering, Fritz downplayed the situation, calling it “no big deal.” He expressed that there was no animosity between him and Zverev following their exchange at the net. Fritz now looks ahead to his next match against Lorenzo Musetti with an opportunity to reach his first major semifinal.
