Tigres goalkeeper Nahuel Guzmán has recently received an 11-game suspension from the Mexican Football Federation for his “inappropriate conduct” during a match against Monterrey. Guzmán, who was not playing in the game due to an injury, was caught using a laser pointer towards Monterrey goalkeeper Esteban Andrada. After the incident, he issued an apology on social media, expressing remorse for his actions.
The FMF’s disciplinary committee released a statement announcing the sanctions imposed on Guzmán. Along with the 11-game ban, the goalkeeper also faces a financial penalty and hours of community service for violating federation rules. Furthermore, Tigres has stated that they will enforce additional penalties based on their internal code, including a fine for Guzmán.
As a result of the suspension, Guzmán will be unable to participate in the remainder of the 2024 Clausura tournament and potentially the beginning of the 2024 Apertura. This setback comes at a crucial time for Tigres, who are currently striving for a playoff spot in the Liga MX. Guzmán’s absence will undoubtedly impact the team’s performance on the field.
Nahuel Guzmán is no stranger to controversy, as he has made headlines in the past for unconventional actions on the pitch. Last year, he garnered attention for pulling a ribbon out of his mouth to distract a penalty-taker during the Leagues Cup. His tendency to push boundaries has earned him a reputation as a maverick in Mexican football.
Despite the turmoil surrounding Guzmán, Tigres will forge ahead with their pursuit of a playoff spot. They are scheduled to play against Necaxa in a home game, looking to secure a victory for their postseason ambitions. On the other hand, Monterrey, currently positioned 3rd in the Liga MX table, will face off against Leon on the same day. Both teams will have to navigate their matches without the presence of Guzmán, adding an extra layer of challenge to their upcoming fixtures.
