Byron Buxton Returns to Center Field After Long Injury Layoff

Byron Buxton returned to center field for the Minnesota Twins after a lengthy absence of 554 days. Having struggled with knee injuries for the past two seasons, the 2022 All-Star finally made his spring training debut, marking an important milestone for his career. The last time Buxton played center field was back in 2022 when he injured himself while diving for a ball. Since then, he has been sidelined due to multiple knee surgeries. However, on Tuesday, he took to the field once again as the Twins faced off against the Philadelphia Phillies, ending the game in a 3-3 tie.

After being limited to a designated hitter role in 2023 due to his knee issues, Buxton’s return to center field was a significant step forward. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli praised Buxton’s performance, noting his agility and strength on the field. Buxton, who had not played in more than 100 games since 2017, expressed his joy at feeling healthy and pain-free for the first time in years. He credited a successful surgery last October for removing the plica tissue in his knee, which had been causing him intense pain. This newfound physical freedom allowed Buxton to fully engage in the spring training activities with enthusiasm and energy.

Despite initial concerns about his return to the outfield, Buxton showcased his confidence and readiness during the game against the Phillies. While he did not make any spectacular catches, he handled the balls hit in his direction with ease and precision. Buxton’s speed and quick reflexes were on full display when he raced to retrieve a ball hit to right-center field, demonstrating his commitment to performing at the highest level. Even though he went 0-for-2 at the plate, Buxton’s focus was on his defensive skills and overall health, which he prioritized above all else.

Looking ahead, Buxton is set to have a couple of days off before returning to play at Hammond Stadium on Friday. Baldelli mentioned that Buxton will resume his regular schedule and continue to build up his strength and endurance as the season approaches. The Twins’ recent acquisition of outfielder Manuel Margot adds depth and flexibility to the team, giving Buxton a reliable backup option in center field. Despite the challenges he has faced in the past, Buxton remains optimistic and focused on taking each day as it comes. He emphasized the importance of staying positive and adaptable to whatever comes his way during the course of the season.

Byron Buxton’s return to center field signals a fresh start for the talented player following a long and arduous journey back from injury. With his health restored and his spirits high, Buxton is poised to make a strong comeback and contribute significantly to the Twins’ success in the upcoming season. His determination and resilience serve as an inspiration to teammates and fans alike, reminding everyone of the power of perseverance and dedication in the face of adversity.
