An Arrest Made: Former NFL Player Arrested in Connection with Mother’s Death

Former NFL player Sergio Brown has been arrested in Southern California in connection with the death of his mother, who was found slain behind her suburban Chicago home. After attempting to reenter the United States from Mexico, Brown was detained and booked into San Diego County Jail without bail.

Sergio Brown, 35, was detained on Tuesday afternoon and a court hearing took place where he agreed to be extradited to Illinois. The San Diego District Attorney’s office spokesperson confirmed the extradition request, giving authorities in Illinois until November 13th to retrieve Brown. While the exact charges against Brown are unclear, a warrant for his arrest cited first-degree murder.

Authorities began searching for Sergio Brown after the body of his mother, Myrtle Brown, was discovered near a creek in Maywood. Relatives had reported her missing, and a medical examiner ruled her death as a homicide with evidence of assault. The investigation led the police to authenticate Instagram videos where Sergio Brown allegedly discussed his mother’s death.

In one of the videos posted on Sergio Brown’s Instagram page, he dismissed news reports of his mother’s death as “fake news” and speculated that it was the work of the FBI. The video, filled with expletives, showed him claiming to believe that his mother was on vacation in Mexico. Another video referenced the movie “Finding Nemo,” with Brown repeating the famous line, “Just keep swimming.”

Sergio Brown, a graduate of Proviso East High School in Maywood, played college football for Notre Dame before his career in the NFL. He played as a defensive back for teams including the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Buffalo Bills from 2010 to 2016.

The arrest of Sergio Brown in connection with his mother’s death has shocked the NFL community and the public. As the investigation continues, authorities in Illinois will work to gather evidence to support the first-degree murder charge. Brown’s videos on Instagram have raised additional questions, and it remains to be seen how they may factor into the case. The family and friends of Myrtle Brown are left mourning her loss, with hopes that justice will be served in due time.
