Alfa Romeo shows signs of progress with points finish in Qatar

Alfa Romeo Racing showed signs of progress at the Qatar Grand Prix with both drivers, Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu, finishing in the points. Bottas secured eighth place, while Zhou finished just behind him in ninth. This double-points finish helped Alfa Romeo surpass Haas in the constructors’ table and move up to eighth place, just seven points behind Williams.

In recent races, Alfa Romeo has been introducing a stream of new parts to enhance the performance of their car. The latest addition was a beam wing, which was introduced in Qatar. This new component served as a finishing touch to make the overall package work effectively. Bottas expressed his satisfaction with the team’s recent steps in understanding the upgrades. He mentioned that they have made progress and finally comprehend the improvements. Although the beam wing has provided some advantages, Bottas acknowledged that the team still struggles with straight-line speed, making it an area for further development.

Both Bottas and Zhou adopted different strategies for the Qatar Grand Prix. Bottas started on soft tires, pitting under the early safety car to switch to a three-long stint plan. On the other hand, Zhou started from the back of the grid and opted for a longer opening run, with a brief stint on soft tires towards the end. Bottas commended the team’s performance on race day, crediting their solid strategy. However, he also acknowledged that the misfortunes of other drivers, such as Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz, played a role in his climb up the order. Bottas highlighted the importance of luck in Formula One and expressed his satisfaction with the team’s overall performance.

Zhou, who had experienced a disappointing run recently, was relieved to secure points for the team in Qatar. Despite starting in 19th place, he fought hard and successfully kept Sergio Perez behind him, which ultimately contributed to his strong finish. Zhou emphasized the team’s progress in terms of racecraft, stating that they are better than Haas and have now overtaken them. While he believes that catching Williams is still a challenging task, Zhou sees it as a significant target for Alfa Romeo to strive for. Moreover, Zhou expressed the need for improvement on Saturdays, as the last three events have been challenging in terms of qualifying performance.
