A New Generation of Racing: Introducing the NXT Gen Cup

In a groundbreaking move, the NXT Gen Cup is set to revolutionize the racing world by providing young drivers aged between 15-25 with the opportunity to take their first steps into the world of motorsport. This exciting series, which originated in Sweden, will see 20 talented drivers, both male and female, compete across six thrilling rounds this season. With events held in iconic cities such as Misano, Berlin, Monaco, and London for Formula E, as well as supporting the DTM at the Norisring and Hockenheim, the NXT Gen Cup promises to be an electrifying addition to the racing calendar.

After the discontinuation of the Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy in 2020, Formula E has decided to introduce a regular support series once again. The NXT Gen Cup aims to provide young drivers with a platform to showcase their skills and nurture their talent. This addition to the European part of the Formula E calendar will allow these up-and-coming racers to share the same stage as the world-class drivers and teams that make up the Formula E championship.

The NXT Gen Cup will feature a single-make series, utilizing electric MINI Cooper SE road cars that have been developed by the Lestrup Racing Team. These front-wheel drive cars generate 180bhp, which can be boosted up to 240bhp with the push-to-pass feature. Equipped with Hankook semi-slick all-weather tires, these electric machines offer the perfect balance between performance and grip. The use of electric vehicles not only aligns with the sustainable ethos of the Formula E championship but also reflects the future of motorsport as we transition to cleaner energy sources.

Formula E co-founder Alejandro Agag expressed his delight in welcoming the NXT Gen Cup to the racing community, highlighting its highly successful debut last year. The addition of this all-electric junior category to the racing calendar underlines the commitment to nurturing young talent and providing them with the opportunities they need to thrive. The NXT Gen Cup represents not only a stepping stone for these young drivers but also a promising glimpse into the future of motorsport.

As Formula E and the DTM join forces to support the NXT Gen Cup, this unique collaboration creates an exciting blend of racing disciplines. These young drivers will have the invaluable experience of racing alongside the Formula E and DTM championships, exposing them to top-level competition and enabling them to learn from the very best in the sport. Fredrik Lestrup, the series founder of NXT Gen Cup, reflected on the incredible journey from an idea on paper to racing alongside these prestigious championships and emphasized the tireless efforts of everyone involved.

The NXT Gen Cup represents a new era in racing, where young drivers have the opportunity to showcase their talent and take their first steps towards a successful career in motorsport. With the support of Formula E and the DTM, this all-electric junior category will undoubtedly create thrilling and memorable moments for both the drivers and spectators. As the racing world embraces the NXT Gen Cup, we eagerly await the electrifying battles and extraordinary performances that lie ahead for these future racing stars.
