Honda’s satellite squad, LCR, demonstrated their commitment to innovation and performance by unveiling their 2025 MotoGP bikes in Bangkok, showcasing motorcycles piloted by seasoned racer Johann Zarco and rookie sensation Somkiat Chantra. This promotional event took place shortly after the Sepang MotoGP test, marking a significant moment in the build-up to the upcoming racing season. The timing of the launch, strategically positioned just before the series’ first-ever fan event in Thailand, reflects LCR’s intent to engage with local fans and promote the sport in the region.
Distinctive Bike Designs and Sponsorships
True to its tradition, LCR has opted for a split color scheme in its two Honda RC213Vs. Zarco’s motorcycle retains the recognizable white and green hues sponsored by Castrol, a partnership that dates back to the mid-2010s. This enduring collaboration signifies the mutual trust and support between the rider and sponsor. On the other side, Chantra, Thailand’s pioneering MotoGP participant, will ride the Idemitsu-backed machine, painted in elegant white and red. This transition from the retired Takaaki Nakagami symbolizes a new chapter for the team as they continue to foster Asian talent in motorsports.
Idemitsu’s role is particularly salient, emphasizing its dedication to nurturing regional racing heroes, as the company previously backed Nakagami throughout his six-year MotoGP journey. Such sponsorship models are crucial for teams like LCR, bridging the gap between talent development and competitive racing.
With the bike launch behind them, LCR is now fully focused on preparing for the rigorous tests and challenges ahead. The MotoGP grid has now completed its series of launches, setting the stage for the anticipated two-day test in Buriram on February 12-13. This testing period will provide teams the final opportunity to optimize their new machinery before the season kicks off in March at the same location.
However, the excitement surrounding LCR’s launch is somewhat tempered by the absence of key racers who are undergoing surgeries due to injuries sustained during testing. Notably, reigning champion Jorge Martin and fellow riders Fabio di Giannantonio and Raul Fernandez, who suffered injuries during the Sepang test, will not participate in the celebrations. Their recovery will be pivotal not only for their careers but also for the competitive balance within the series.
Entering the new season, LCR’s aspirations hinge heavily on Honda’s ability to address the performance issues of the RC213V. Last season revealed a competitive gap between Honda and its European counterparts, along with Yamaha. Despite these challenges, LCR demonstrated remarkable resilience in 2024, finishing 10th in the teams’ standings and outscoring the factory squad, HRC. Zarco notably secured Honda’s highest individual finish, coming in eighth at the Thai Grand Prix, illustrating his capabilities even amidst a tough season.
As LCR gears up for 2025, the focus will be on leveraging the team’s existing strengths while mitigating the shortcomings of previous seasons. The Thai launch event not only marks a crucial step in that direction but also highlights the growing popularity and support for MotoGP in Asia, setting the stage for exciting developments ahead in the world of motorcycle racing.
