The Phoenix Suns have found themselves in legal trouble due to allegations made by a former employee, Andrea Trischan. Trischan was employed as the program manager of diversity, equity, and inclusion for the Suns. She filed a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Arizona attorney general’s office’s civil rights division, seeking $60 million in damages. Trischan claimed that she faced racial discrimination, harassment, and retaliation during her time with the Suns.
Trischan was hired by the Suns shortly after former owner Robert Sarver was suspended and fined for his conduct and the team’s workplace culture. The Arizona attorney general’s office is currently investigating the allegations made by Trischan. However, the organization has denied any wrongdoing and labeled the accusations as baseless.
The Suns’ senior vice president of communications, Stacey Mitch, dismissed Trischan’s allegations as a ploy to extract money from the organization. The Suns emphasized their commitment to creating an inclusive work environment and condemned what they called opportunistic behavior on Trischan’s part. They expressed confidence that the claims would not stand up in court and were optimistic about a swift resolution.
Workplace Culture Concerns
Trischan’s role within the Suns was to address concerns related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, which had been highlighted by previous reports regarding the team’s workplace environment. She discovered that several executives accused of misconduct were involved in creating a diversity council within the organization, despite her objections. Trischan believed that this move contradicted the organization’s supposed commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace.
Following her objections and attempts to investigate the alleged misconduct, Trischan claims she faced harassment, discrimination, and retaliation from her colleagues and superiors. She was eventually terminated in July 2023 after being placed on a performance improvement plan. Trischan and the Suns have explored the possibility of mediation to resolve the dispute, but as of now, no agreement has been reached.
Trischan’s legal team has indicated their intention to file a lawsuit against the Suns if a settlement cannot be reached. The organization remains engaged in the review process with the Arizona Civil Rights Division and believes that the claims made by Trischan will be proven baseless. Despite the ongoing legal battle, most of the executives mentioned in the initial reports from 2022 remain with the team, as the Suns undergo a change in ownership.
