Marvin Harrison Jr. Sued by Fanatics for Breach of Contract

The sports retail giant Fanatics has filed a lawsuit against Arizona Cardinals rookie Marvin Harrison Jr. for failing to uphold a contract he signed with them in May 2023. The lawsuit, which was brought to the New York Supreme Court, alleges that Harrison has not fulfilled his obligations under the agreement and has even gone as far as to publicly deny the existence of the contract.

Fanatics claims that Harrison not only refused to honor the contract but also disclosed confidential information about the agreement to ESPN. The terms of the contract, which included autographs, signed trading cards, game-worn apparel, and other marketing opportunities, were redacted in the lawsuit. However, it is reported that the deal was worth at least $1 million. Fanatics also accused Harrison of negotiating with other companies while still under contract with them, demanding that Fanatics match or exceed the offers he received from competitors.

The relationship between Fanatics and Marvin Harrison Jr. started in 2023 when Harrison was still a student-athlete at Ohio State. Fanatics initially signed Harrison to a limited promotion and license agreement that ended in April 2024, shortly before the NFL draft. Recognizing Harrison’s potential, Fanatics approached him for a more long-term and comprehensive deal, which led to the signing of the contract in May 2023.

Fanatics alleges that they have made payments to Harrison in August and October 2023 but that he has failed to fulfill his end of the contract despite multiple requests. The company stated that Harrison’s actions have caused them financial harm, requesting damages in the “millions of dollars” in the lawsuit. Fanatics also highlighted that Harrison has not signed the NFL Players Association’s group licensing agreement, which would allow the union to market his name, image, and likeness to multiple companies.

The Response

Marvin Harrison Jr. has yet to publicly respond to the allegations made by Fanatics. It remains to be seen how he will address the lawsuit and whether he will comply with the terms of the contract. The legal proceedings are expected to shed more light on the details of the agreement between Harrison and Fanatics and determine the outcome of the case.

The lawsuit filed by Fanatics against Marvin Harrison Jr. for breach of contract is a significant development in the sports industry. It underscores the importance of upholding contractual obligations and the potential consequences of failing to do so. As the case unfolds, all eyes will be on Harrison and Fanatics to see how they navigate this legal challenge and resolve their dispute.
