Recently, the former interpreter for Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani made headlines when he pleaded not guilty to bank and tax fraud charges. Ippei Mizuhara was accused of stealing nearly $17 million from Ohtani to pay off sports gambling debts in a yearslong scheme that involved impersonating Ohtani to bankers. The case has shed light on the personal and professional relationship between Mizuhara and the two-way player.
Despite initially pleading not guilty, Mizuhara has reportedly negotiated a plea deal with federal prosecutors in the sports betting case. The plea agreement detailed the allegations against him, including one count of bank fraud and one count of subscribing to a false tax return. While his defense attorney stated that Mizuhara plans to plead guilty in the future, the hearing on Tuesday was merely a procedural step as the case moves forward.
As part of the plea agreement, Mizuhara will be required to pay restitution to Ohtani amounting to nearly $17 million, in addition to over $1 million to the IRS. The bank fraud charge carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in federal prison, while the false tax return charge could result in up to three years behind bars. Mizuhara’s gambling activities resulted in significant losses, with winning bets totaling over $142 million and losing bets amounting to around $183 million.
Despite being free on an unsecured bond, Mizuhara is required to undergo gambling addiction treatment and adhere to strict bond conditions. The case is set for a status conference on June 15, as Mizuhara awaits the final sentencing. It is worth noting that MLB rules prohibit players and team employees from engaging in any form of sports betting, including on baseball. Ohtani, on the other hand, has remained focused on his performance on the field as the legal proceedings unfold.
