Curry, at the age of 36, managed to score the most clutch points in the league this season, totaling at 189 points. Additionally, the Golden State Warriors played in the highest number of clutch games, standing at 48 games throughout the season.
In an interview, Curry emphasized the importance of dealing with failure when it comes to performing well in clutch moments. He stated, “You’ve got to be able to deal with failure. You have to be OK with the shot you miss, and have a short memory with it.” Curry emphasized the need to forget about missed opportunities and focus on the next play, showcasing a strong mental game that contributes to his success in clutch situations. He attributed his confidence to the hard work he puts into the game, which allows him to be ready for any moment that comes his way.
Curry received 45 first-place votes and a total of 298 points in the voting, securing his position as the Clutch Player of the Year. DeMar DeRozan closely followed with 34 first-place votes and 272 points, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander trailed with 11 first-place votes and 160 points. Other players such as Nikola Jokic and Jalen Brunson also received recognition, showcasing the competitive field in the NBA when it comes to clutch performances.
Despite his success in winning the award, Curry expressed disappointment in not making it further in the playoffs after losing to the Sacramento Kings in the play-in tournament. Reflecting on the team’s performance, Curry acknowledged the need for improvement and mentioned the importance of self-assessment. He stated, “When you lose, you have to look yourself in the mirror and say, ‘What can we do to get better? What holes can we fill?'” Curry remains optimistic about the future, mentioning that the team will use the offseason to make necessary adjustments and come back stronger next season.
DeMar DeRozan and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander also had impressive performances throughout the season, with DeRozan leading the Chicago Bulls to a solid record in clutch games and finishing second in total clutch points. Gilgeous-Alexander played a key role in Oklahoma City Thunder’s success in clutch moments, contributing to their top seed in the Western Conference and high winning percentage in clutch situations. Both players showcased their ability to perform under pressure and make significant impacts on their respective teams.
