Manchester United Eyeing Wolverhampton Wanderers Head Coach for New Coaching Set-Up

Manchester United is reportedly interested in speaking with Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Gary O’Neil about a potential role in a new coaching set-up at Old Trafford. Following the INEOS group’s acquisition of a 27 percent stake in the club, the new regime led by INEOS director of sport Sir Dave Brailsford is looking to establish a new coaching structure with a head coach at the helm.

While no final decision has been made on Erik ten Hag’s future as manager, sources have indicated that Manchester United have already evaluated several candidates as potential successors. These include England manager Gareth Southgate, Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, and Brentford’s Thomas Frank.

Gary O’Neil took over as manager at Wolverhampton Wanderers last August after the departure of Julen Lopetegui. He successfully guided Wolves to contend for European qualification this season, following his previous accomplishment of keeping Bournemouth in the Premier League during his debut top-flight job last season. O’Neil, 40, has reportedly been informed of Manchester United’s interest in him, prompting discussions about his intentions with senior figures from the club.

In addition to exploring managerial options, Manchester United is also focused on strengthening their entire coaching team. O’Neil, who signed a three-year contract with Wolves last summer, would require compensation if he were to join United. His coaching career began with Liverpool U-18s, where he was appointed by Michael Edwards, the sporting director at the time. Edwards and O’Neil had previously collaborated during their time at Portsmouth in the early 2000s.

Overall, Manchester United’s pursuit of Gary O’Neil indicates their commitment to revamping their coaching staff under the new ownership of the INEOS group. The potential addition of O’Neil, with his track record of success in the Premier League, could bring valuable expertise and leadership to the club’s coaching set-up. As discussions progress, it will be interesting to see how United’s coaching structure evolves and the impact it may have on their future performance in the league.
