Scott McLaughlin, a 30-year-old New Zealander, showcased his talent and skill during the season opener of the IndyCar Series. Starting from ninth place, McLaughlin wasted no time in making his way to the front of the pack. With a bold inside pass on Rinus VeeKay in Turn 1, he quickly moved up to sixth place. McLaughlin, along with his Team Penske teammate Will Power, adopted a unique strategy by running the harder primary compound tires for the first two stints before switching to the softer alternates for the final 33 laps. It was this strategic move combined with his impressive pace that helped McLaughlin secure the final spot on the podium.
McLaughlin’s success also contributed to a triumphant day for Team Penske. With Josef Newgarden claiming the top spot and Power finishing in fourth, it was a stellar performance for the team. McLaughlin expressed his delight at the team’s performance, stating, “I’m stoked for the team. It’s unreal. With Will right behind me, he was pushing me to the end. The car was super quick, and we had a great day.”
One of the defining moments of the race came during a restart on Lap 72 when McLaughlin executed a daring inside move on Colton Herta into Turn 10. This move, made possible by the grip of his green alternate tires, ultimately played a crucial role in determining his final position. Reflecting on the battle on the track, McLaughlin shared, “Honestly, I had so much fun out there today. It was just proper racing, thinking on your feet with fuel strategy and where you put the car and how aggressive you were, and that’s what IndyCar is all about.”
McLaughlin’s third-place finish marked his 13th career IndyCar podium, a significant milestone for the driver. He described the race as a championship day, emphasizing the importance of maximizing points. The New Zealander expressed his gratitude towards his team and Chevrolet for their support and collaboration, which played a key role in his success. Looking ahead, McLaughlin remains optimistic and focused on continuing to deliver strong performances throughout the season.
Scott McLaughlin’s impressive performance in the IndyCar season opener demonstrated his talent, skill, and strategic acumen. With a determined drive and a bold approach on the track, he was able to secure a podium finish and contribute to Team Penske’s success.
