The Growing Relationship between MLS and Liga MX

Major League Soccer (MLS) recently announced that this year’s All-Star Game will once again feature a match against Liga MX, marking the third time in the past four years. The game is set to take place on July 24 at Columbus, Ohio’s Lower.com Field, bringing back the intense competition between the two leagues that fans have come to love.

Camilo Durana, MLS’ Executive Vice President of Properties and Events, expressed his excitement about the collaboration with Liga MX. He emphasized the success of the previous All-Star Games and the high level of competition that has been established. This partnership goes beyond just on-field matchups, with both leagues sharing best practices and working together on various initiatives.

MLS is undefeated against Liga MX in the All-Star Game, with victories in 2021 and 2022. The decision to continue with this format was driven by the success of the Leagues Cup and the energy it brought to both leagues. Durana also hinted at the possibility of including Liga MX in future editions of the All-Star Game, highlighting the positive outcomes seen from their partnership.

Following the All-Star Game, the Leagues Cup will kick off on July 26, featuring clubs from both MLS and Liga MX. This “World Cup style” tournament has gained popularity and will further showcase the talent from both leagues. Additionally, the Campeones Cup will see the reigning MLS Cup champions, Columbus Crew, face off against Liga MX’s Campeon de Campeones winners later this year.

MLS’ roster for the All-Star Game will be determined through a fan vote, selection by the All-Star coach, and two additional picks by MLS Commissioner Don Garber. On the other hand, details regarding Liga MX’s 26-man roster are yet to be announced. Apart from the main game, there will also be a Skills Challenge held on July 23, where both leagues have had one win each.

The relationship between MLS and Liga MX continues to grow, with a focus on collaboration and showcasing the best of North American soccer talent. The upcoming All-Star Game, Leagues Cup, and Campeones Cup are all evidence of the successful partnership between these two leagues, offering fans exciting matchups and intense competition on the field.
