At the season-opening race in Bahrain, Max Verstappen displayed a dominant performance by finishing a significant 22.4 seconds ahead of his teammate Sergio Perez and 25.1 seconds clear of Carlos Sainz from Ferrari. Red Bull’s team principal, Christian Horner, believes that the Bahrain race did not provide a clear representation of the overall competition. He attributes this to Red Bull’s different tyre strategy, as the team used a soft tyre for the final stint, unlike the rest of the field that opted for a harder compound. Horner points out that this disparity in tyre choice may have exaggerated the gaps in performance, especially considering the cooler-than-normal conditions during the event.
Horner explains, “You can’t read too much into a single event due to the nature of the circuit, the temperature, and the tyre choices. We were surprised that others didn’t make the same tyre choice we did. It may have distorted the results towards the end of the race, but overall, it was a dominant display by our team and a great victory.”
Despite Horner’s belief that the competition is closer than it seems, major competitors like Mercedes’ Toto Wolff have a different perspective. Wolff praises Verstappen’s extraordinary performance, stating, “I think Max is not in a different league, but is in a different galaxy. The performance is extraordinary.” When asked if this dominance indicates Red Bull winning all races, Wolff reluctantly admits, “Unfortunately, yes. You just need to acknowledge his strong performance levels.”

Horner refutes the idea that Red Bull is miles ahead of the competition and suggests that the Bahrain race results hint at a formidable challenge for his team. He emphasizes, “I have a feeling that the field is going to be much closer this year. It’s a long season with different venues, challenges, and conditions. Drawing conclusions from a single race is premature. We had a great start, but we must stay grounded and focus on the upcoming races.”
He adds, “We made the right decisions this weekend with tyre choices, executed a flawless race with both cars, and achieved a strong finish. The testing season indicated that the competition is tightening up, and we must remain vigilant in the races to come.”
