The Romanian athlete is seeking over $10 million in damages, claiming that the company’s nutritional supplement led to her being handed a four-year ban for doping. During the 2022 U.S. Open, Simona Halep tested positive for Roxadustat, a drug commonly used by individuals with anaemia. Unfortunately, this substance is listed as a banned substance by the World Anti-Doping Agency due to its ability to enhance endurance by increasing haemoglobin production and red blood cell count. Halep alleges that she unknowingly consumed the banned substance through Schinoussa supplements, specifically the Keto MCT product, which was contaminated with Roxadustat without being disclosed on the label.
Simona Halep vehemently denies ever using any prohibited substances and claims that Quantum Nutrition’s negligence, along with their false assurances of the product’s legality, has not only harmed her professional career but also brought immense humiliation. As a result, the tennis star is also seeking punitive damages from the Canadian company.
The legal battle between Halep and Quantum Nutrition is being fought in a New York state court in Manhattan. While Halep contests the four-year ban imposed on her by the International Tennis Integrity Agency tribunal, the tribunal, while acknowledging her lack of knowledge about the supplement’s contamination, casts doubt on the extent to which Roxadustat was found in her urine sample from August 29, 2022. Halep has recently filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland, expressing her hopes for the truth to prevail and eagerly anticipating her return to the court.
Quantum Nutrition, operating as Schinoussa Superfoods, maintains its innocence and has yet to respond to the allegations and lawsuit. The founder of the company, in an interview with The Globe and Mail, dismissed Halep’s claims, portraying the situation as an attempt to find a scapegoat and declaring that his company is being unfairly targeted as “the fall guy” in this controversy.
