Dayana Yastremska and Linda Noskova both made history by reaching their first-ever Grand Slam singles quarterfinals at the Australian Open. Yastremska secured her spot by defeating two-time champion Victoria Azarenka in a captivating match. The Ukrainian player showed immense resilience and determination throughout the encounter.
In the first set, Azarenka had multiple opportunities to take control of the match. She served for the set twice and even had two set points at 6-5. Reflecting on her victory, she remarked, “I always felt I was running behind the train, but because I’m a little bit of a fighter, I think I won this match, and plus the support, it was amazing.”
Interestingly, there was no handshake between Yastremska and Azarenka, as is customary between Ukrainian, Russian, and Belarusian players. Instead, Yastremska raised her racket as a gesture of respect towards her opponent.
In contrast to Yastremska’s triumphant win, Elina Svitolina’s journey in the quarterfinals was cut short due to a back injury. Svitolina faced Linda Noskova and encountered a setback right from the beginning. The first game of the match lasted a staggering 11 minutes and consisted of 20 points. Noskova broke Svitolina’s serve and quickly established a 2-0 lead.
However, the match took a dramatic turn as Svitolina suffered a back spasm during the first game. She took a timeout and received medical treatment, but her condition didn’t improve significantly. Svitolina’s serve speed decreased, and her movement on the court appeared compromised. After being broken for the second time, Svitolina tearfully shook Noskova’s hand and retired from the match.
Expressing her disappointment, Svitolina revealed, “I felt like someone shot me in the back. It was really out of nowhere.” Prior to this sudden injury, Svitolina had been in good form throughout the tournament and had high hopes of progressing further.
It’s worth noting that Noskova had already made a name for herself in the tournament by defeating top-ranked Iga Swiatek in the previous round. Despite the unconventional circumstances of her victory against Svitolina, Noskova acknowledged that it wasn’t the way she had envisioned winning.
