The Dakar Rally, known as the biggest rally-raid in the world, attracts motorsport enthusiasts from every corner of the globe. For Rodrigo Varela, a member of a distinguished Brazilian motorsport family, it was a dream come true to compete in this prestigious event. However, his journey to the Dakar debut was not without its obstacles.
Just when everything seemed in place for Varela and his navigator Bozzano, a serious blow was dealt to their project. During the Christmas holidays with his family in Brazil, Varela received disturbing news – the cargo ship carrying his Can-Am UTV to Dakar had been attacked by Houthi pirates in the Red Sea region. Although the ship managed to escape, it had to divert from its original route, delaying the arrival time by 20 days and rendering their participation in the race unfeasible.
The incident that befell Varela’s cargo ship was not an isolated case. In late 2023, the United States government announced an international coalition to protect cargo ships in the Red Sea region. In a battle with three vessels on New Year’s Eve, American helicopters attacked the pirates, resulting in the tragic death of ten crew members. These acts of piracy are linked to the ongoing civil war in Yemen, where forces supported by Saudi Arabia and Iran are engaged in conflict. The Houthis, one of the main factions in the war, oppose Israel due to its war against Hamas.
Determined not to let the disappointment of not competing overpower them, Rodrigo Varela’s family embarked on a race against time to find a replacement car. Thankfully, a solution presented itself in Portugal. There, they located a Can-Am owned by a driver who had previously come to Brazil to compete in the Sertoes Rally. Despite the urgency, modifications and adaptations were made, and they successfully passed the Dakar inspection.
However, the problems did not end there. As the spare parts were also on the attacked ship, Varela and Bozzano faced the challenge of participating in the Dakar with limited resources. Without all the necessary parts, which are crucial for the demanding maintenance required during the race, they relied on the help and solidarity of other teams. The Dakar Rally, intertwined with racing and adventure, fosters a sense of camaraderie, where competitors lend assistance whenever they can.
Upon their arrival in Saudi Arabia, Rodrigo Varela faced the daunting task of sourcing additional equipment for the race, starting with a power generator. This relentless pursuit of finding solutions and persevering through adversity became a recurring theme for the determined duo.
Despite the challenges they faced, Varela and Bozzano impressed with their performance in the Prologue, marking their official Dakar debut. Their resilience paid off as they secured a fifth-place finish among the 36 UTVs registered in this year’s rally, competing in the T4 category. A stage win on Saturday was the icing on the cake, further affirming their unwavering spirit and determination.
Reflecting on their accomplishments, Rodrigo Varela expressed his gratitude for the support and teamwork that carried them through the tribulations of the last ten days. He acknowledged that the fifth-place finish was truly remarkable given the challenges they had overcome.
