The Boston Red Sox have struck a deal with right-hander Lucas Giolito, solidifying their starting rotation for the upcoming season. According to sources, the contract spans two years and is valued at $38.5 million. This signing comes at a crucial time as the starting pitching market begins to heat up.
Giolito’s contract includes an opt-out clause after the first season, providing him with flexibility depending on his performance and the team’s expectations. Additionally, the deal features innings-based performance bonuses, allowing the total value of the contract to reach $40.5 million. In 2024, Giolito will earn an $18 million salary and will have a $1 million buyout if he chooses to opt out. If he remains with the Red Sox for the 2025 season, his salary will increase to $19 million.
A Conditional Option for 2026
Looking ahead, there is a conditional option for the 2026 season. If Giolito throws under 140 innings in 2025, the team holds a $14 million club option. On the other hand, if he throws over 140 innings, a $19 million mutual option becomes active. However, there is a $1.5 million buyout in place for this mutual option. These conditions provide added motivation for Giolito to perform at his best.
Impressive Performance and Pitching Consistency
Giolito, who is entering his age-29 season, showcased his abilities during a challenging 2023 campaign. He logged a career-high 184 1/3 innings, split between the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels, and Cleveland. Although he struggled with home runs, allowing an American League-high 41, his 204 strikeouts ranked 13th in baseball.
The Red Sox are hoping to unlock Giolito’s full potential, especially considering his previous three seasons as one of the most effective starters in the league. During this stretch, Giolito received Cy Young votes and maintained ERAs of 3.41, 3.48, and 3.53. With his proven track record and durability, he joins an elite group of pitchers, including Gerrit Cole, Aaron Nola, Charlie Morton, Jose Berrios, and Kyle Gibson, as one of the few to throw at least 160 innings in each of the past five full seasons.
Both the Red Sox and the New York Mets expressed interest in acquiring Giolito, recognizing the need to bolster their respective rotations. Ultimately, Boston secured the right-hander, adding him to a rotation that already features Chris Sale and Brayan Bello. The Red Sox also have several promising options in Nick Pivetta, Kutter Crawford, Tanner Houck, and Garrett Whitlock.
While the Red Sox initially pursued marquee names like Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, both players opted to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers for staggering amounts.
