The New Jersey Devils’ hopes for a successful season have been dealt a severe blow with the news that their top defenseman, Dougie Hamilton, is out indefinitely. Hamilton underwent surgery to repair a torn left pectoral muscle on Friday, sidelining him for an undetermined period of time. The 30-year-old has been a key contributor for the Devils this season, registering 16 points in 20 games and averaging a team-high 20 minutes and 59 seconds of ice time per game.
Hamilton’s absence will be deeply felt by the Devils, particularly in their power play where he had been instrumental in the team’s success. As the quarterback of New Jersey’s power play unit, Hamilton played a significant role in their NHL-leading power play conversion rate of 35.6%. With his absence, the Devils will need to make adjustments and potentially give young defenseman Simon Nemec an opportunity to contribute on the second power play unit.
Furthermore, Hamilton’s injury will also necessitate changes in the team’s defensive pairings. His defensive prowess and ability to log significant minutes on a nightly basis will be sorely missed. Adding to the Devils’ woes, veteran forward Tomas Nosek will also be out indefinitely after undergoing surgery on his right foot. His absence puts further strain on the Devils’ roster, requiring other players to step up and fill the void left by his absence.
