The 24-lap race at Motegi experienced a significant setback when heavy rain led to a red flag being waved at the beginning of the 14th lap. One of the most unfortunate victims of the treacherous conditions was Johann Zarco, who suffered an aquaplaning incident. As he entered Turn 12, his Ducati slid off the track. Although Zarco managed to get his bike back to the pitlane within the allocated time, he was not allowed to participate in the subsequent restart. This decision was based on Article 1.25.1 of the FIM sporting regulations, which states that riders must cross the designated pitlane entry timing point with their motorcycle within five minutes after the red flag is displayed in order to be classified.
Zarco expressed his disappointment at the turn of events, explaining that he had a strong start to the race but was unfortunately hit by Maverick Vinales in the first corner due to a chain reaction collision. Fortunately, Zarco managed to stay upright and rejoin the race. The rain started to fall, prompting most of the riders to head into the pitlane. This worked to Zarco’s advantage as he was able to change to rain tires and quickly make up lost time. Despite the challenging conditions, he was overtaking competitors and demonstrating impressive speed.
However, disaster struck for Zarco as he encountered aquaplaning while maneuvering through the bridge section. This caused him to lose control of his bike and crash shortly before the red flag was issued. Determined to salvage his race, Zarco diligently pushed his bike back to the pitlane. Unfortunately, this was not sufficient to meet the regulation requirements, as he did not technically cross the pitlane entry line. Instead, he used the adjacent service road. As a result, Zarco was unable to participate in the restart and was ultimately not classified in the race results.
An Anguished Zarco
Zarco’s frustration about the situation was evident as he expressed his anger. He underscored the fact that he was on track to finish in sixth position before the aquaplaning incident and subsequent crash. Zarco highlighted the technicality that cost him his final position, citing the requirement to cross the two-meter-wide line of the 60km/h pitlane entry. As he had been five meters off to the side, the officials did not count his efforts. Overall, Zarco was left disappointed and dissatisfied with the outcome.
It is worth noting that had Zarco followed the correct procedure and entered the pitlane after his accident, he would have retained his sixth-place position in the final results. However, due to the technicality of not crossing the entry line, his efforts were in vain. This incident highlights the importance of adhering to regulations and the potential consequences of not doing so, regardless of the circumstances.
